Our canteen managers have an opportunity to run their own school canteen, without requiring a large injection of cash for start-up. “I started with Hungry Hamper in 2012 at a relatively small high school, which was good in hindsight as I got to learn the job in a smaller environment.
I had experience in catering, although that is not necessary, as Hungry Hamper and the area supervisor are there to help you out at the start, and also whenever you need. Before I even started we had a training at head office to show us how to complete paperwork, council records as well as tips on displaying your food.
Unlike other businesses, there is very little to outlay financially to start your own business. Hungry Hamper supply all of the larger appliances, so all you need to purchase is stock and a deposit/bond for the equipment. This eliminates any financial risk, as you really can’t lose!
I now have three schools, a larger high school and two large primary schools, as well as a Kindergarten that is attached to one of the primary schools that uses online ordering once a week for students and staff. I employee 7 staff.
I love my job, not many people can say that, as it gives me a good income, flexible hours (as I am the boss), week-ends free and all of the school holidays. This is a big bonus as I have children of my own, and that means I can take them to sport etc after school and week-ends. I work approx. 50-55hrs per week, which may seem a lot, but it’s only for 10 weeks and you get holidays!

Our on-site manager, who is appointed to look after the day-to-day operation of your canteen / tuckshop / cafeteria, attends to everything required for the management of a food business including ordering food, arranging staff, paying bills, banking. They have the ingoing training and ongoing support of an Area Supervisor who will also regularly meet with you to ensure your needs and expectations are being met.
Online ordering is also a part of our scope and set up by us, and we have a number of additional options including excursion packs, fundraising and take-home meals. We also understand the need for the catering of special dietary requirements, eg. gluten free, nut free and vegetarian, to name but a few.
This system is really designed and meant to be easy, for all involved; you do what you do and know that you can leave us to do what we do, in partnership and as a team of course. We believe life is complex enough as it is so let’s keep at least one thing simple!
